PinGreetins from Former President of the SKK, Prof. Masato Tanaka

Prof. Masato Tanaka

I stepped down from President of the SKK on the occasion of the Annual General Meeting of the SKK held on Saturday November 17, 2007. Since I was elected at the SKK AGM held in 1998, I was working for the SKK for 9 years. I am very happy and honoured to have had the experience of working together with many dedicated board members whom I am very much proud of.

We decided to operate the SKK with neither permanent officers nor standing offices, otherwise we would have needed much money to maintain them. Because of that, we had some difficulty naturally, but we could establish the SKK Articles, operate the web site, maintain the mailing lists, publish the member list booklet, hold meetings with some visitors from Imperial College or the Imperial Alumni Associations of other countries, and hold the SKK AGM & Party every year.

The total number of the SKK members exceeds 400 now, and we find continuing applications for the SKK membership every month. Now we are proud that the SKK can make its presence well known domestically and internationally.

I am very grateful to the SKK board members who have made great contribution to the SKK for long.

I am also grateful to all the SKK members, Imperial College Alumni Office, The Science & Innovation Department of the British Embassy Tokyo and the British Council Tokyo for their kind cooperation and warm support.

The SKK is now led by the new President, Prof. Shun-ichi Nakamura of Tokai University and his Vice Presidents, Dr. Hitoshi Hamaguchi, Prof. Koichi Hishida and Dr. Masakuni Hirata.

I trust the SKK will make greater presence by increasing its activities in the future.

I was elected as president of South Kensington Kai (SKK) at Annual General Meeting (AGM) held at the British Embassy on November 2007. Since SKK is an organization with members over 400 and the sole alumni association of Imperial College of Science, Technology and Medicine, which has world reputation, I am honored and feel deep responsibility. I had been vice president supporting ex-president Prof Tanaka. Three vice presidents were also elected at the AGM: Dr Hitoshi Hamaguchi, Prof Koichi Hishida and Dr Masakuni Hirata. Our new organizing tem consists of president, three vice presidents and some more committee members, and will try hard to make SKK more active and enjoyable.

We basically continue the strategy set by ex-president Tanaka and his group: to make successful the Annual General Meeting and the party that is the main event of SKK, to keep the SKK web site in good condition, to participate in events of the London University Association, to welcome overseas guests, to organize lectures of guest speakers and so on.

We also want to try new approaches to improve SKK. The AGM and other events have been held in Tokyo and the members in other areas are not easy to attend them. At the same time not many young people participate in them. To solve these situations we will try to hold events outside Tokyo. Another measure will be to distribute electro news letter or journals among SKK members. Besides, some Imperial College Alumni Associations in Asian countries want to deepen connections with SKK. We will seek ways to conduct joint events.

If SKK members have any comments or suggestion, please let us know. Finally, we would like to ask your cooperation to make SKK more prosperous and enjoyable.
