Greeting from the President
The Annual General Meeting and Party 2002
of the South Kensington Kai was held at the
New Hall of the British Embassy Tokyo with
a cordial support by Mr. Brian Ferrar, First
Secretary, Science and Technology, British
Embassy. It was successful that 43 members
enjoyed the party and the very interesting
talk on "University of London and Meiji
Restoration" by Mr. Toshiaki Sakurai,
essayist and UCL alumnus. The invitation
to alumni of other colleges also contributed
to the success.
One of the important issues decided at the
AGM is introduction of the supporting membership
which enables us to accept application for
SKK membership from people who had not been
able to join the SKK under the previous articles,
such as people who are going to the Imperial
College. These people can join us with a
proper process if they hope so under the
revised articles.
Imperial College and UCL are discussing the
future merger. We have to watch the progress
although there may be twists and turns.
Next year, the British Embassy will hold
many events to introduce the latest technology
of UK. We think it is a good opportunity
to strengthen the relation with Imperial
College and the SKK.
If you know someone who is eligible to the
SKK and doesn't know the SKK yet, please
advice him or her to apply for our membership
at the SKK website.

Mr. Toshiaki Sakurai who is a writer and UCL alumnus gave us a talk on "University of London and Meiji Restoration".
His talk was about how Choshu samurai changed their policy of exclusionism to anti-exclusionism through the studies at University of London and the relation between University of London and Sir Ernest Satow who was a British diplomat deeply involved in Anglo-Japanese Alliance which was concluded in 1902. One hundred years have passed since the conclusion of the Alliance and it was indeed an exciting experience to hear his talk in the British Embassy.
